Eaton has an opening for an Engineering Specialist, Electro-Mechanical Systems in the Corporate Research & Technology team in Southfield, MI.
Corporate Research & Technology (CRT) focuses on the front end of innovation by: conducting research to advance the state of the art, emphasizing technologies with cross-business impact and innovating to provide Eaton’s customers with safe, efficient, and reliable power management solutions.
The Electro-Mechanical team has the principal goal of identifying, developing, and justifying commercialization of significant growth opportunities for diverse Eaton businesses in the area of electromechanical technologies related to systems and machinery, including system architecture, motors, actuation, mechanisms, and power transmission. The team engages in defining, planning, leading and executing technology programs, applying mechanical engineering theory and practice to Hydraulic, Vehicle, Aerospace, and Electrical applications. The team maps technology solutions to market opportunities.
The Engineering Specialist is expected to lead technology strategy and execution for specific applications. This includes acquiring resources, funding and establishing key partnerships both internally and externally to drive technological advancement. They will be responsible for meeting the schedule, scope, cost and technical targets for all research and development efforts under his/her control.
The Engineering Specialist should serve as a subject matter expert within the area of Electro-mechanical Systems for Eaton. This includes developing and maintaining relationships with the external technical community and academia, active participation in industry or technical groups and events, publishing papers, etc. Finally as a subject matter expert internally the Engineering Specialist will be expected to mentor junior staff and consult with internal business & engineering customers.
Leads complex global technology realization programs/projects utilizing our internal project execution processes, including Design Reviews and Technical Reviews
Project leads are the single point of contact for the entire project. They are responsible for creating, executing and tracking all the milestones for the entire project. They also assign roles and responsibilities for the project team members
Program leads are responsible for setting the strategy for an entire program that can encompass multiple projects. They are responsible to assign project leads and technical leads for all program activities and are the single point of contact to upper management for all program activities.
Serves as (or support) Program Managers in the development of detailed project plans and value proposition
Lead globally diverse cross-functional project teams effectively and manage selected projects under the guidelines of our internal stage-gate process
Leads the development of strategies for technology roadmaps for specific applications that are linked to and supportive of the overall CRT and business strategies
Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with emphasis on electro-mechanical power systems from an accredited institution
Minimum of 5 years of post-degree experience with industry exposure in electro-mechanical systems research or engineering, specifically system level modeling to conduct trade studies and down-select architectures for electro-mechanical systems, components, and controls
2 years of experience with prototype electro-mechanical system design, build, test , data capture, and analysis
Excellent understanding of computational techniques and tools for analysis of complex mechanical systems, good hands-on knowledge of multiphysics modeling & simulations
Demonstrated experience in leading technology development activities.
Experience interfacing with global teams and working in a matrix organization.

Understands risks and is able to set key milestones for technology development
Can assess trade-offs between business needs and solutions and influence business strategy
Ensures and drives advancement of Technical, Commercial, and Manufacturing readiness levels
Experience in government proposal submission and win
Able to identify strong business alignment with the government funding opportunity
Active leadership in a technical or industry event/group (ex: serve as a co-chair for a session at a technical conference)
Experience taking more than one new application though new product introduction
PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on electro-mechanical power systems
