Eaton Corporation Lead Software Engineer, Software and Controls Center of Excellence in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Eaton’s Fuel and Motion Control Systems division is currently seeking a Lead Software / Mechatronics Engineer to join our team. This position is based at our Grand Rapids, MI – Software Electronics and Controls Center of Excellence facility.

The Lead Software Engineer is responsible for driving the development and testing of all software, firmware, and controls activities across Eaton’s Aerospace Division.

In this role, you will :

  • Provide project and technical leadership for a global team on all elements of certification, design, and verification, including developing planning documents and completing design and test reviews.

  • Build systematic models of electro-mechanical actuators and review the controls strategy and performance trade-offs with the end goal of developing motion control algorithms for electric drive systems made of inverters and permanent magnet brushless motors/induction machines

  • Develop embedded software under a strict process (DO-178C) and software level requirements that will drive design within customers’ specifications

  • Design robust and detailed test procedures for design validation/verification, delivering clear commendation of test plans to the engineering and test teams to support effective tests and obtaining reliable data for examination

  • Strive to achieve desired motor performance by optimizing closed loop control in normal and field weakened mode

  • Visit customers and get an intimate understanding of customer duty cycles, with a clear focus to drive future product improvements, building and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers and other functional groups

  • Lead external partners and internal engineering resources on the integration work between motor inverter, controls model interface points, service tool drivers and other intelligent embedded systems.

  • You will evaluate, learn and apply the latest motor controls technologies and standards to create value to the organization.

Qualifications

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science from an accredited institution

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in embedded software design

Minimum of two (2) years experience with electro-mechanical systems including motors, controls and electronics

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position. Only candidates currently located within a 50 mile radius of Grand Rapids, MI, will be considered.

  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. ‘Green Card Holder’), Political Asylee, or Refugee

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in software design or focus on mechatronics

  • Experience developing motor controls (brushless-dc) using Matlab/Simulink

  • Experience implementing motor control algorithms on an embedded processor with a language like C

  • Experience developing software/firmware per an engineering development process for RTCA/DO-178/DO-254, or Software Engineering Institute CMMI level 3, or equivalent

  • Hardware In the Loop, Model In the Loop, and/or Software In the Loop testing

  • Knowledge of Configuration Management processes and tools such as DOORS and the IBM Rationale Toolsuite

  • Experience with auto-coding methodologies and technologies

  • Ability to plan, estimate, and track software project development phases
