Eaton’s Aerospace Division is seeking an Aerospace Additive Manufacturing Engineer-Post Process & Nondestructive Testing. The Aerospace Additive Manufacturing Engineer-Post Process & Nondestructive Testing will be based in Southfield, MI; Jackson, MI; Grand Rapids, MI; Euclid, OH; OR Beachwood, OH.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is an exciting new technology that offers substantial benefits to the Aerospace industry. Although much focus has been given to the actual growing of the parts using the latest AM technologies, very little attention has been giving to the methods for post-processing these parts, which generally accounts for 40% of the total cost.

Positon Overview:

The Aerospace Additive Manufacturing Engineer-Post Process & Nondestructive Testing is responsible for addressing this gap by being responsible for identifying and developing the post-process and non-destructive testing techniques (NDT) for FMC and FED OE and Aftermarket additive manufacturing (AM) projects. The role will work closely with the AM Applications Engr. Specialists, Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Quality teams. In addition, this role will develop these processes working with the Southfield AM CoE, Pune AM CoE and external partners. The position includes defining the post processing and NDT techniques for the types of AM processes Eaton is pursuing, including being directly responsible for the development of pilot projects demonstrating the techniques are effective and working with the operations team to industrialize them. This will require finding technically effective solutions that are economical and satisfy the requirements for each type of AM process and material. The individual must have a strong innovative manufacturing engineering acumen who has the technical background to leverage the capabilities of advanced manufacturing and inspection techniques that can be applied for parts built using AM. The role also needs to educate the teams designing the parts and the AM build process to ensure the post-processing costs are minimized.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop new post-processing solutions utilizing the capabilities of advanced and conventional manufacturing. This includes the use of traditional machining, fixturing and inspection along with new approaches for powder and support removal and inspection methods specifically design for AM.

  • Work with the CRT, Additive CoEs in both Southfield Michigan and Pune India and external partners to develop the post-processes methods required to develop and commercialize identified targets.

  • Develop the strategy, roadmap and execution plan for leveraging unique post-process and inspection techniques for the various types of processes and materials being used.

  • Build the cost models and capital plans associated with the various post-processing techniques to enable the applications, design and operations teams to evaluate alternative concepts and share the potential options with customers.

  • Lead the effort to deploy AM post-processing best practices across the Aerospace organization including ensuring the continued education of the cross-functional organization. This includes formal and informal training on the various post-process techniques used for AM projects.

  • Define the strategy for capital deployment and utilization.

  • Lead internal/external innovation workshops to identify potential game-changing post-processing solutions enabled by AM for the various types of AM processes and materials used.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science (i.e. Metallurgy or Material) from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum of 5 years of design or manufacturing engineering experience.

  • Minimum of 3 years aerospace industry experience.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now and in the future.

  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. ‘Green Card Holder’), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience qualifying/certifying parts for Aerospace.

  • Experience defining NDT techniques for Aerospace applications.

  • Experience in additive manufacturing experience – polymer or metal.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills. Able to manage a cross-functional technical team to develop concepts into solutions.

  • Proven track record of driving change.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute technology development plans.

  • Experience defining the post-processing techniques used for Aerospace products – machining, inspection, etc.

  • Experience working with in-situ quality monitoring technologies on additive manufacturing equipment.
