Eaton Corporation Product Design Specialist in Burlington, Ontario

Eaton is looking for a Product Design Specialist for our Burlington, Ontario ESSG Canada Group.

Position Overview:

The primary function of the role is the design of specialized electrical assemblies for use both in the Canadian as well as the global market. Working with a preliminary marketing specification, this person will be intimately involved in every aspect of the design process starting from the point of product inception and following through to the point of manufacturing. The position is responsible to provide engineering support to various Canadian product groups. The position is also responsible for enhancing/supporting engineering processes across Canada (Enovia, Plant Order Manager, Engineered Drawing Packages, etc.).

Essential Functions:

  • Use of Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD programs to produce 3D concepts, models, drawings, designs and documentation for distribution and control products (primarily Fire Pump Controllers, Switchboards, Panelboards and Residential type distribution products) based on the relevant product standards.

  • Develop test procedures/apparatus and perform testing, both mechanical and electrical, to confirm proper functionality, response, or adherence to product standards

  • Develop, map, and trouble shoot control process flow logic for industrial/commercial control devices such as fire pump controllers.

  • Evaluate and test firmware to verify functionality and suitability both to product specification and standards requirements.

  • Understand and apply product standards in the development and evaluation of product for certification purposes.

  • Prepare, monitor, maintain and ensure adherence to Project timelines, budgets, and processes.

  • Initiate and lead project meetings.

  • Provide technical information and engineering support to production, marketing, field service, warranty administrators, and customers.

  • Work with marketing and sales to define product and engineering specifications for new product.

  • Create instruction leaflet's, bills of material, relevant matrices, charts, work instructions, product structures and provide training.

  • Co-ordinate and work with engineering, production, and materials to perform validation runs and implement new products or processes.

  • Identify and incorporate cost improvement opportunities and provide cost evaluations including make vs. buy analysis.

  • Take a lead role in managing and implementing the Eaton Business System processes related to product design including the corporate PROLaunch process and it related activities.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or Technology diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Technology from an accredited institution

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience with product design or electrical distribution and control engineering experience

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada without any company sponsorship now and future

  • No relocation is provided. Only candidates that reside within 80km will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • P.Eng designation or C.E.T.

  • Experience with fire pump design

  • Experience with electrical distribution

Position Criteria:

  • Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor or comparable ProE or SolidWorks 3D modeling software

  • Familiar with the safe use of basic hand tools to perform prototyping assembly

  • Fully proficient with Microsoft Office

  • Experience and working knowledge of Project Management methodology

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to effectively move projects forward

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to think through a problem systematically

  • Ability to design and develop test processes or apparatus to validate designs

  • Ability to read, comprehend and apply product and utility standards

  • Ability to develop a strong knowledge of corporate software/tools and act as a subject matter expert/support resource

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to effectively move projects forward

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task while maintaining a prioritized work schedule

  • Self-motivated, energetic, and capable of working in a fast paced environment with minimal supervision working alone or as part of a team taking direction.

  • Innovative thinker able to develop new product designs or improve existing designs in order to help the corporation meet it overall goals

  • Comfortable with public speaking or presenting in front of a group
